Eyes of Laura Mars

Eyes of Laura Mars

Between her turn in Chinatown and her oft quoted role as Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest, Dunaway starred in one of my favorite 70s suspense thrillers, Eyes of Laura Mars. There are no grizzly horrors in this movie, but plenty of tension and red herrings, as well as pretty amazing 70’s fashion and a bitchin’ soundtrack of sort of glam-rock-disco-y tunes. It’s also a story about love, about women trying to make it in the world, and about how violence in society and in our lives affects us in indelible ways.

TRAILER TUESDAY: Galaxina and Star 80

Trailer Tuesday ‐ November 05, 2013

Welcome to our first Trailer Tuesday, when we dig up cobweb covered promos and trailers for various old flicks!

A few of us were talking about what would be the best way to kick off the weekly feature and I recalled a few movies I’d seen as a kid while living in Russia. They were terribly dubbed, so given the bad translation and the fact that I was too young to get a lot of the humor anyway, a lot of the movies kind of went over my head. Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler

'20s, Crime, Film Noir, The Reviews ‐ November 01, 2013

This movie is really old. This movie is two movies long. I don’t mean there’s a sequel; I mean it’s actually two movies long. You don’t get to the end until you get to the end of movie two. It’s also a silent film from Germany made in the early 1920s. If you’re still interested in the movie after hearing all of this, we can continue!

House 2: The Second Story

House 2: The Second Story
  • Genre:
  • Release Date: 1987

Not to be confused with Hausu, the House movies are one of my favorite horror-comedy series. They were weird as hell, and had cameos with dudes from Cheers. I’m also really into the whole “horror house” side of things, so this franchise is perf for my horror needs. Now I know it would make more sense to start with the first House, which starred Great American Hero (GAH!) William Katt, but in this blog we throw all logic out the window and go with our GUTS. Do not fret my pets, we will most likely make our way to the OG installment eventually, but today we will have a ‘lil chat about House II: The Second Story.

Ghoulies 2

Ghoulies 2
  • Release Date: 1988

I’ve always been kind of obsessed with the idea of traveling carnivals and funhouses. Growing up we had a pretty big carnival in my hometown, and I would look forward to it for months. I love how the cardboard murals on the outside of a funhouse promise mystical and magical lands that the inside rarely delivers on. It’s like the time I took that flight to mars at a local amusement park and was treated to a couple crappy plastic aliens in a brightly lit room. The exterior promised sexy aliens dancing and humans being whisked away by flying saucers and the interior just didn’t deliver. One of the rides at my local carnival had a painting of a gumball machine filled with eyeballs – I thought that thing would REALLY BE INSIDE the haunted house and that image probably helped shape 15% of my being, and Ghoulies 2 probably contributed to that space in my brain as well.
